Wave Away – new single Gone Awhile
My new Wave Away single “Gone Awhile” is out today. This one is extra special to me – it was the first demo I recorded after getting back into songwriting, after a long 20 year hiatus.
My girls had been encouraging me to start making my own music again, and this was the song that made me think I might actually be able to do it. It started with a demo I recorded in June 2022 – the only song I ever wrote on my baritone acoustic. But my progress stalled on the drums and some of the guitar melodies- they just weren’t quite right, and I left it unfinished.
But after several years and seven other Wave Away song releases, I finally found my way back to it over this summer. Several months of intense rewrites, rerecording and drum producing, and it finally feels right. Thanks to my old friend and Drop Daddies drummer Ian Fullmer, for the drumming guidance that helped me get it done!
It’s always hard to characterize my own music – but I’ve been told that there are hints of Oasis, Bowie and Nick Drake in there…
They said they’d be gone awhile
Don’t ask why
Don’t come lookin’ round
Don’t wanna be found
Heavy, the streets they come from
Heavy, the things they run from
Heavy, mmm mmm mmm
Heavy
Now they’ve been gone awhile
Don’t wanna look back
Won’t see those streets again
The memories contract
Heavy, the streets they come from
Heavy, the things they run from
Heavy, mmm mmm mmm
Heavy
Gone, gone, gone
They’ll be long gone
Gone, gone, gone
Steady, they’ll find their way down
Steady, they’ll keep on running
Steady, ooh ooh ooh
Steady
Gone, gone, gone
They’ll be long gone
Gone, gone, gone
